Teenage midfielder Neil Kilkenny scored twice on his first League One start for Oldham to fire them to a vital 3-1 win at Bradford City.

The 18-year-old, on loan from Birmingham City, scored a goal in each half to seal all three points in this ill-tempered Roses clash.

The away side took full advantage of a moment of madness from Bradford winger Nicky Summerbee, who was red-carded on the hour for a needless stamp on 40-year-old David Eyres.

The two sides had gone into the interval level after Dean Windass has cancelled out Kilkenny's opener.

The youngster had applied a cool finish from the edge of the box after Chris Killen and Aaron Wilbraham had cleverly combined in the city box.

But Bradford dragged themselves level against the run of play 10 minutes later through leading scorer Windass. Summerbee floated a long free-kick into the Oldham area which found its way to Windass, who was unmarked on the far post, and he notched his 12th of the season with a neat diving header.

Both sides were pushing forward in the second half but the game turned Oldham's way when Summerbee received his marching orders.

Having already shown him a yellow card for the use of an elbow, referee Jamil Singh had little option but to send Summerbee off after he lashed out at Eyres.

It took Oldham less than a minute to take advantage when Killen was first to knock down substitute Kevin Betsy's knockdown to side foot home from 12 yards.

With the 10-men pushing forward looking for an equaliser Oldham were always likely to catch them on the break.

They sealed the points with a controversial third goal with less than ten minutes remaining.

Referee Singh decided to let play continued even though Bradford midfielder Steven Schumacher was on the floor with a nasty facial injury which saw him later taken to hospital. Oldham swept forward and Kilkenny tapped home to claim a much deserved second to the anger of the home fans.

Although Bradford huffed and puffed they could not find a goal that would have set up a tense finish.
