The former Leeds player has not figured in Nicky Law's team since the opening day of the season.
Late last week, he flew to Denmark to see a specialist, and has subsequently had an operation.
A club spokesman said: "David went to see another specialist last week and had an operation on Monday night.
"At the moment we don't know how long he will be out for."
