Ellison, 31, has featured 27 times for Rotherham this season, scoring four goals, but has found himself down the pecking order in recent weeks following the arrival of Ian Thomas-Moore.
Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore said: "Kevin's been fantastic for me. Things just haven't panned out this season, but I've got fantastic respect for him.
"He's got great ability on the ball, an excellent delivery from set-pieces and it will do him good to get some games in."
Ellison, who counts Stockport, Tranmere, Hull and Leicester among his former clubs, arrived at Rotherham on a free transfer in the summer of 2009.
